What is Zakat?

Zakat is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.

Zakat Al-Mal, or ‘the Zakat of wealth’ refers to the pillar of Islam stating that every adult Muslim of sound mind who owns wealth over a certain amount must pay 2.5% of that wealth which was acquired within the lunar calendar year. The Qur’an outlines the eight categories of people who are eligible to receive Zakat: the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need.

We spend the funds on the first two categories of Zakat – the poor and needy.

How much is Zakat?

Your Zakat donation should amount to 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth. Therefore, if your total assets (after any debts owed) amounted to £10,000, you would pay £250. There are lots of free and easy to use Zakat calculators online.

Our promise to you

Your Zakat donations are handled with the greatest of care to ensure they reach eligible recipients quickly and securely. Zakat payments made to Afghanaid are treated as restricted funds and made available directly and only to Zakat eligible projects. 100% of Zakat payments are spent on projects and associated costs to help those identified as in need. Zakat is not used to cover any of Afghanaid's organisational costs that are not directly linked to administration of Zakat and is only used to fund the specified projects.

As a humanitarian and development charity, Afghanaid abides by strict humanitarian principles, meaning we work where need is greatest. Afghanistan is a Muslim-majority country, however we do not discriminate the support we provide based on religion and as such some communities may also have a small number of non-Muslim project participants in similar need of support and as such will also benefit from the project.
