Afghanistan is the hardest place in the world to be a woman.

Since 2021, a complex and dire humanitarian emergency has taken its grip on Afghanistan. Resourceful, resilient women have been central to the survival of their families through this crisis. Yet, they are now excluded from many forms of employment, unable to travel freely and banned from receiving a formal education past primary school age - making it tougher and tougher for them to support themselves and their families.

It is reported that women's employment decreased between 2021-2022 by as much as 75%, with very minimal recovery. In 2024, 82% of women reported worsening feelings of anxiety, isolation and depression. Women-headed households are the most vulnerable, with a much higher reliance on debt, increased reports of early marriage of daughters, and higher rates of food insecurity.

When women are involved, societies are more inclusive, prosperous, and strong.

We support women to grow their own food so they are more able to feed their children. We support them to start their own businesses, enabling them to become more economically independent, lift their families out of poverty, and have greater control over their futures. We support them to build and nurture support networks with other women, so they can seek solace, support and the strength to carry on through friendship. We support primary-aged girls to improve their attendance in school, so they can keep learning for as long as they can.

Decades of research, and our own experience, shows that when women and girls can develop the skills, access the resources and build the support networks they need to thrive, societies become more inclusive, prosperous, and strong.
