The Ceres Food Film Festival is an international film festival dedicated to increasing awareness of food-related issues around the world. We're pleased to announce that Afghanaid's new film, Be The Light, has been officially selected as part of the festival's 2024 line up.

The festival

Ceres, the Roman Goddess of Harvest and Wheat, represented the divine power of agriculture and grain. The name comes from the Latin root “cer,” which means “to grow.” Ceres Film Festival is building a global community of storytellers that values and champions a sustainable, integrative, and curious approach to food, and our shared food ecosystem.

This year, the 8th instalment of the festival is taking place from 17th-25th October, and Afghanaid is thrilled to be a part of the official festival selection under the Shorts category. Charles Davy, Afghanaid's Managing Director, said:

"We are absolutely thrilled to be included as part of the Ceres Food Film Festival. This opportunity allows us to amplify vital stories from Afghanistan surrounding hunger, food, farming, and sustainability - and the families that are impacted by these issues every day. As the climate crisis continues to erode the ability of families to cope, and the global spotlight on Afghanistan fades, the Ceres Food Film Festival allows us to tell stories that inspire meaningful change. Through the festival, we’re confident our film will spark conversations, inspire action, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Afghan families."

We'll be posting updates to this page for where and when you can catch our entry - in the meantime, you can browse the full line up of fantastic films here.

The film

If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light.

-Rumi

In Afghanistan, the climate crisis isn't a distant threat - it's already here. Over the past several years, it's been driving an enormous food crisis - currently, 15 million Afghans face acute food insecurity,

In June 2024, Afghanaid premiered a brand new film series, Be The Lightwhich episodically explores 4 elements - water, fire, earth and people - in order to take a deep dive into how climate change is already affecting ordinary Afghans, and how Afghanaid and it's partnering communities have been pioneering community-led climate action in Afghanistan for over a decade.
