Latest Stories Bringing Clean Water and Hope to Rural Families Roya*, a mother of six, lives in a remote village in Samangan Province. Her husband works as a daily labourer, but opportunities are scarce. Whatever we earn is only enough to keep our family from going hungry. For years, even their most basic needs, especially in health and hygiene, were difficult to meet. Families across the village faced similar difficulties, with limited income, poor sanitation, and unsafe water supplies leaving them vulnerable to waterborne diseases. When Afghanaid’s team visited her village, Roya spoke to them about the challenges she experienced, and enrolled in the project to participate in the health and hygiene awareness training sessions. Community members have become more aware of personal hygiene, family health, and environmental cleanliness. As a result of these practices, we have witnessed a noticeable reduction in common waterborne diseases compared to previous years. Families living in the village also received a hygiene kit containing essential items they had previously been unable to afford, such as soap and toothbrushes. These small, but vital tools and the results of improved sanitation practices encouraged local households to continue prioritising their health and hygiene even after the kits were finished. For Roya, the most urgent challenge was the lack of access to safe drinking water. Unsafe supplies had long exposed the entire community to preventable illnesses, and women often bore the burden of walking long distances to fetch water each day. To provide safe water sources, Afghanaid with the support of the local community, drilled two water wells and installed a pipeline network throughout the village. Now, clean water is available in every alley of our village Looking ahead, Roya hopes her husband will find stable employment so they can provide a more secure future for their children. I want them to grow up in a healthy environment where hygiene is always prioritised. Now that her village has access to safe water sources, Roya is also committed to promoting responsible water use within her household and community, ensuring that this valuable resource is conserved for future generations. The access to safe water has transformed our daily lives, and we recognise the importance of protecting it. I am deeply grateful to Afghanaid for their meaningful support, which has enabled our community to live in a cleaner, healthier and more dignified environment. *Her name was changed.
